The answer is YES! But it's not as simple as taking a magic pill or following a quick fix diet.
Firstly, let's understand what Hashimoto's is. It's an autoimmune disorder that affects your thyroid gland, causing it to become underactive (hypothyroid). When this happens, your metabolism slows down, and your body tends to gain weight more easily. Hashimoto's can also cause other symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, hair loss, and joint pain.
The good news is that Hashimoto's weight gain can be reversed through diet and lifestyle changes. Exercise is great for overall health, but it's not always the answer when it comes to weight loss with Hashimoto's. Instead, you need to focus on the root cause of the problem - which is the immune system and its affects on your thyroid gland.
Here are some steps you can take to help reverse Hashimoto's weight gain:
Get Your Thyroid Hormone Levels Checked Regularly: This is important to make sure that your thyroid hormone levels are optimal. Your doctor will monitor your thyroid labs to make sure they are within the normal range.
Eat a Healthy Diet: While your diet cannot cure the autoimmune condition, it can help you prevent weight gain and reduce inflammation. A diet rich in nutrients and whole, unprocessed foods is essential for weight loss with Hashimoto's. Most of my patients with Hashimoto's often end up experimenting with different diets until they find one that makes them feel best. Foods that are anti-inflammatory and high in antioxidants can help reduce inflammation in your body and improve immune function. Foods high in fiber, healthy fats, and protein such as leafy greens, berries, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish, organic grass-fed/finished meats are excellent choices.
Manage Stress: Stress can have a significant impact on your immune system and thyroid function. Chronic stress can cause you to gain weight even if your diet never changes! So all that hard work you put into your diet will do very little for weight loss. Practicing stress management techniques such as meditation, or deep breathing can help reduce stress levels and jumpstart your weight loss again.
These are just a few steps you can take to help reverse Hashimoto's weight gain. It's not about following a restrictive diet or doing hours of intense exercise - it's about making sustainable and consistent lifestyle changes that work for you. I'll teach you how to stop stressing about what to eat so you don't fall back into that binge-restricting eating cycle. And when you stop feeling deprived, weight loss become easier.
